ABOUT RACHEL
Born just 1 lb. 10 oz. and only 12 inches long, Rachel was nicknamed “the fighter” by the doctors in the hospital, and this “fighting spirit” is what she also brings to the sport of gymnastics. In April, 2010, Rachel placed 3rd on Uneven Bars (9.3) in the Level 10 Regional Championships. In March, 2010, Rachel placed 1st on Uneven Bars in the Level 10 New York State Championship in the 16-19 age category. She also placed 5th All Around with a score of 36.500. In Jan.-Feb., 2010, Rachel placed first and second on uneven bars in three Level 10 meets, scoring higher than elites in her division. In 2009, Rachel placed 3rd on Beam at Easterns and at Regionals she placed 2nd All Around, 2nd on Beam, and 4th on Uneven Bars. In 2008, Rachel was the Regional Uneven Bars Champion and placed 12th on Bars at Easterns. Rachel was a TOPs National Qualifier in 2003, 2004, and 2005. This marks her 12th year in gymnastics. She trains at Chelsea Piers with Chris McClain, Elena Oleinik, and Glenn Aser.
Besides gymnastics, Rachel has a passion for music and the visual arts. Bringing her own flair to the character of the Genie in the musical Aladdin at her school, Rachel choreographed a floor routine on stage with cartwheels, back handsprings and front handsprings to go along with her singing of “Friend like Me.” Rachel has had artwork displayed in two galleries in New York, one, a watercolor “Untitled” at the CUE Foundation in 2008 and 3 pieces at STEELCASE July-September 2009.
In August, 2010, Rachel will travel with youth from New York City to the Memphis inner city neighborhood where the "The Blind Side" (starring award winning Sandra Bullock) was filmed. They will work with underprivileged youth and also care for elderly and homeless individuals.
The previous summer Rachel devoted a week to building houses in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, helping the victims of Hurricane Katrina, along with 18 other students and adults from New York. “It really made me realize how much we all have here and how important it is to help those with so much less and in need.” Rachel spent the month of August as a counselor at a fine arts camp in New York teaching children 3-10 years old.
In July, 2010 a NYC & Brooklyn Cable Television Program called “Good News Today” will feature Rachel’s gymnastics experience and advice she gives young people today on keeping fit and healthy.
Rachel just finished 10th grade at the Professional Children’s School in Manhattan. She enjoyed courses in Creative Writing, British Literature, World History, Physics, and Geometry.
Rachel will be competing Level 10 again this year and her goal is to compete for a Division I NCAA College Team in 2012.
