Glenn Aser /// Optionals Coach
As a former gymnastics competitor with 20 years as a coach and choreographer and 17 years as a Level 10-rated judge , the level 7-10 Chelsea Piers gymnasts have a tremendous resource available to them in Coach Glenn Aser.
Glenn has long participated in gymnastics, enjoying eight years as a competitor. While in high school Glenn won numerous Empire State Games and New York State high school gold medals, and in 1981 he held the title as Junior National Champion in FX. After club sport Glenn went on to compete four successful years for Penn State University in NCAA. After college Glenn spent almost ten years coaching at the Gymnastics Training Center of Rochester, New York. However in 1997 the lure of New York City helped Glenn decide to commit to his current gymnastics home, Chelsea Piers.
Glenn credits learning basics from his first coach in club sport and his college coach from Penn State as helping to shape his perspective on the sport. For years he has watched as much gymnastics as he’s able in order to have an understanding of movement, which has greatly aided and impacted his choreography efforts.
Tell us about your coaching highlights:
I always enjoy seeing athletes grow and mature in the sport, and I particularly enjoy being a part of an athlete’s love for gymnastics. It is a great thrill to work with our girls, especially when preparing our team athletes for state, regional and national competitions.
What do like best about coaching?
There is a moment when working a new skill or even just a technique when I can see that the athlete finally gets it, like an epiphany. The satisfaction these moments give me is immeasurable.
Do you have any advice for the girls?
Of course. Listen to your coaches!
Is there a quote you would like to share?
Shun Fumimoto of Japan competed at the Olympics on a fractured kneecap, and he said “My desire to win was greater than my moment of pain.”
Glenn Aser is from Rochester, New York, and holds a BA in English Literature and minor in technical writing from Penn State University, 1986. Glenn became a level 10 gymnastics judge in 1991 and has officiated at various meets within the tri-state area. His training comes in handy when our girls need objective feedback in preparation for competitions.
